Civility & Family Dinners…. Taste & Q&A…. Review of Slow Cooked BBQ Pork

The other day I got stuck in the traffic and tried REALLY hard not to check my blackberry. Thankfully NPR had a great show on, as usual. It was, I believe, the Kojo Nnamdi Show – a handful of scholars and writers were discussing the prevalence usage of vulgar language and how that impacts civility, particularly among the youth.
One of the reasons why kids behave this way, they said, not surprisingly, is because the kids don’t have enough family dinners.
Of course it was not just the food, it was the whole ritual of setting the table, taking seats next to each other, sharing thoughts, passing plates, complimenting the cook, taking turn doing the dishes, etc. It was the most basic collaboration that bonds the family together. Through the smallest act during this ritual, kids learn civility in its most fundamental form.
I totally get it. On the other hand, I really didn’t get into this business with the high goal of improving civility among our young citizens. I’d have to admit that I really just wanted to make life easier for myself. (My kids so far have demonstrated good citizenship as well, by the way.)
The civility effect of having dinners planned can be found on MYSELF actually. I am much more agreeable with the kids and the husband when I don’t have to answer the question “what’s for dinner?” with a combination of guilt, frustration and resentment.
The Slow Cooked BBQ Pork Loin Strips this month is a prime example. I dropped all the ingredients in my crock pot in the morning, and voila! Done! And it was one of the most tender, juicy, flavorful BBQ Pork I’ve ever had. It can be served as is; between buns; in a wrap; with cheese, with rice. The leftover was great for lunch.
